Bandai Namco Filmworks Co. Ltd. (President Satoshi Kono) announced the final results of the ‘Worldwide Gundam General Election’ on March 31. The first official Gundam popularity poll project. Bandai Namco Filmworks solicited votes in 10 languages and measured the popularity of Gundam by type based on data collected from around the world. The subjects are Gundams that appeared in the Universal Century and Alternative series animations, as well as over 200 units bearing the name Gundam. Voting was limited to one vote per person per day, and votes were accepted from October 10 to December 25 of last year, 11:59 PM Japan time, resulting in over 1.33 million valid votes. The results were announced.p>
The top spot in the worldwide overall rankings was taken by the ν Gundam featured in Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack (see the table for the ranking). The top 10 ended up covering both new and old Gundams that appeared in each decade from the 1980s to the 2020s, without being biased toward a particular era. From the top 20 units in the interim results (announced last November), Destiny Gundam (Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY) has dropped out. In its place, the 00 Qan[T] that appeared in the Mobile Suit Gundam 00 movie has climbed to 17th place.
The rankings were also announced for every 10 languages. The top 10 in Japanese are slightly rearranged compared to the global rankings. When we extract the number one from the top 10 of each language, the overlap of Gundam names is limited to two languages, and they are divided into seven Gundams. From this result, it is shown that the popularity of each Gundam varies slightly from country to country.
Shown below is the ranking in English. Those 10 Gundams correspond to about 5% of popular characters, selected from more than 200 units.Moreover, that popularity changes little by little depending on the country.Accordingly, the movement of character goods also changes, so this result should be used as information for merchandise sales.
